Lara (29) works as a makeup advisor at a make-up store. She is also the trade union delegate there. In Argentina our long history with inflation has created regular mechanisms to negotiate salaries twice a year (Union wage negotiations). The problem is that salaries always lag behind prices, because they are adjusted only twice a year and the governments prediction of inflation is always lower than reality. In this picture Lara poses with one month salary plus some extras from her modeling jobs on the side. In Argentina, we carry around huge wads of cash, a security concern and logistical headache for savers, businesses and banks. It is not unusual for people to arrive to pay larger outlays with bricks of banknotes. Our highest denomination bank note (1,000 peso note) will hardly buy you two packages of top-end toilet roll, while a children’s menu hamburger with fries in a fast-food chain comes in at 940 pesos. You are not crazy! Your groceries are actually shrinking!! Shrinkflation as also known as package downsizing, is the process of items shrinking in size or quantity, or even sometimes reformulating or reducing quality while their prices remain the same or increase. Shrinkflation is often used as an alternative to raising prices in line with inflation. Consumer protection groups are critical of the practice. The reduction in pack size is sufficiently small as not to be immediately obvious to regular consumers so consumers are not aware of the higher unit price. The practice adversely affects consumers’ ability to make informed buying choices.
Buying staples in bulk in Argentina can feel like saving money. Or better than saving money, because saving money means it just sits there while its value falls. Nonperishable goods are a popular target. “Whenever I see a discount, I buy,” says Sara, “I have enough shampoo for a year and a half. As long as there is no expiration date, I just pile up. Chad. N’Djamena. A teenager washes his clothes in a lake created by the flood just outside Karkanjeri IDP camp. Since there is no running water inside the camp, nor even a laundry area, people are forced to go to the flooded area to wash their clothes and heself. In late October 2022, the country of Chad experienced one of its worst floods ever with one million people affected across the country, hundreds of homes destroyed, and extensive damage to croplands and livelihoods. The floods, caused by heavy rains in southern and central areas, have affected 18 of the country’s 23 provinces and floodwaters have engulfed more than 465,000 hectares of fields and 19,000 head of livestock. According to data collected by the IRD (Institut de Recherche pour le développement), the University of N’Djamena and the Directorate of Water Resources of the Ministry of Urban and Rural Hydraulics of Chad, the level of the Chari River in N’Djamena has reached a peak of 8.14 meters on 13 November. The affected people suddenly became “climate” displaced, finding themselves left with nothing and catapulted into IDP camps scattered throughout the various districts of the capital. Without a house, without their belongings, almost 200,000 people are living a new life inside tents made of sheets, without assistance, food and a government programme, further aggravating the already critical situation of food insecurity in the country. “Dalla serie Apnea © Fausto Podavini

Behind a family member, free a chair to make room for the baby’s mother. The team of doctors tried everything to save the little girl but complications from malnutrition made all efforts in vain. In Chad, the leading cause of infant mortality is linked to malnutrition followed by malaria. The latest data report that 13.5% of the population suffers from global acute malnutrition of which 4% is severe. The chronic malnutrition rate is 31.9%. His stage name was created by combining the word ‘Uzi’, which recalls with his bursts the events of life that led him to grow up too quickly, to his given name. In recent years he has released various hits and is considered a rising star of the Italian scene. Corviale is a residential complex on the south-western outskirts of Rome.
